Al Hanisim

Al Hanisim in Sehmoneh esrei

In Shmoneh Esreh on Purim we add the tefilah "Al Hanisim.. Bimei Mordechai.." in the brocha of Modim, before "V’al kulam".

If one forgot to Say Al Hanisim, it depends on the following:

If one realized his mistake before saying Hashem’s name in the brocha of "Hatov shimca u’lcha no’eh l’hodos", he should return to Al hanisim and continue from there.

If one realized his mistake after saying Hashem’s name in the brocha, he should say Al Hanisim before "Yihyu l’ratzon". In this case it should be said as a request, not as thanks. [Elokeinu vailokei avoseinu aseh lonu nisim v’niflo’os k’mo she’osisa lavoseinu... Beimei Mordechai etc..]

If a person realized his mistake after completing Shemoneh Esrei, he should not repeat the Shemoneh Esrei.

Al Hanisim in Bircas Hamazon

In Bircas Hamazon on Purim, we add "Al Hanisim" in the second brocha, before "V'al hakol". If one forgot to Say Al Hanisim, it depends on the following:

If one realized his mistake before saying Hashem’s name in the brocha of "Al ho’oretz V’al Hamazon, he should return to Al hanisim and continue from there.

If one realized his mistake after Hashem’s name in the brocha was already said, he should say Al Hanisim before "Horacham hoo y’zakeinu". It should be said in the form of a request, not as thanks. [Horacham hoo ya’aseh lonu nisim v’niflo’os k’mo she’oso lavoseinu... Beimei Mordecei etc..]

If a person realized his mistake after completing Bircas Hamazon, he should not repeat Bircas Hamazon. If however this occurred in Bircas Hamazon after the Purim seudah, a Rabbi should be consulted.

If Purim is on Sunday, and a person began a meal on shabbos, and continued it until after Shabbos, only "Rtzei" should be said in Bircas Hamazon, not Al Hanisim.

Bircas Hamazon for a meal which began on Purim, but continued into the following night: Our custom is to follow the opinion that Al Hanisim should be said. If however the person already davened Ma’ariv, some posskim maintain that Al Hanisim should not be said in Bircas Hamazon. It is therefore preferable to say Bircas Hamazon before davening Ma’ariv.

If Purim is on Friday, and the Purim seuda began on Friday and continued into Shabbos, only "Rtzei" should be said, not "Al Hanisim". (When the sun sets, Kiddush must be recited before continuing the meal.)
